Mindanao, Philippines:

There is a tsunami threat to the Philippines and Japan after an earthquake of at least 7.5 magnitude struck Mindanao on Saturday night. In the context of the earthquake in the Philippines, local administrative officials have said that there is a danger of tsunami waves three feet or more high on the sea coasts.

Inspection and safety instructions:

Phivolcs, the Philippines’ earthquake research center, said tsunami waves could reach midnight and continue for several hours. Local people have been asked to immediately evacuate those living near the beach or move inland.

Message from Japan:

Japanese broadcaster NHK said tsunami waves of up to one meter were expected to hit Japan’s southwestern coast by 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Effect of earthquake:

Phivolcs predicted no major direct damage from the earthquake, but indicated a tsunami threat in areas close to the coast. Unfortunately, there has been an earthquake, but no casualties or damage have been reported yet.

Social Awareness and Preparedness:

It is important to be safe and prepared during this time, and follow the instructions given by local officials to stay safe. Even tsunami warning systems have been set up to warn the public.
